The tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly those in Borneo and Papua New Guinea, are among the most complex and species-rich terrestrial ecosystems in the world. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), deforestation is one of the most serious environmental problems facing Southeast Asia. With some 88 percent of its forests already gone, Southeast Asia is losing forest area more rapidly than any other region.
